Volunteer Educational Facilitators for See Hear Feel Film

The See Hear Feel Film Program: This one-of-a-kind education initiative aims to help third grade students become more active viewers of visual media and lead more examined lives. The program uses film to spark students' creative expression and storytelling skills, while helping them write with clarity, confidence, and joy. During the 2009-2010 school year, students from over 35 elementary schools throughout Westchester County will visit the JBFC’s Media Arts Lab twice for two-hour workshops. During the workshops, students view and discuss short films from around the world and collaborate creatively  in small groups to practice the tools filmmakers use to tell stories.

See Hear Feel Film Session Leaders:
Anne Marie Santoro, Barbara De George, Linda Cimillo, and Nancy Woolf.

Commitment: Educational Facilitators lead groups of 8-10 students in collaborative activities during the second hour of the workshop. Workshops are held at the JBFC’s Media Arts Lab on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 am and 12:15 to 2:15 pm. The time commitment is flexible. Some volunteers help out with See Hear Feel Film once or twice a week, while others make a commitment for once or twice a month. We welcome any level of commitment!

Training: Wednesday, Sept. 29, 10:00 am-12:30 pm, followed by catered lunch. Please RSVP by Sept. 24. Student workshops begin on Oct. 5. Training for Film Unit Two is Friday, Jan. 28, 10:00 am-12:30 pm.

Education Fieldwork Internships

With our school-based programs and the addition of the Media Arts Lab, the JBFC is at the head of an international movement to raise a generation of students equipped and inspired to analyze, assess, and communicate using visual and aural media. Over 60,000 students have participated in our original and groundbreaking programs since 2001 and as our programs continue to grow, intern opportunities in this area abound.

Interns participate in our education programs as small-group facilitators in our 3rd grade SeeHearFeelFilm and 4th grade Minds In Motion programs. Because Interns work closely with the students, energy, commitment and a keen interest in working with kids is a must for these placements. Hands-on training is provided.

All JBFC internships are non-paying. However interns are encouraged to take advantage of the many events and classes that take place on our campus.  To help make this possible, all interns are entitled to the following benefits:

• Free films: Interns gain free admittance to regular screenings and special events where seats are available (tickets cannot be secured in advance).
• Course Discount: Interns who take courses at the Media Arts Lab during their internship, or the semester directly following, qualify for a 20% reduction of the course fee.

We accept applications throughout the year but give preference to those who apply by the following deadlines:

Office Internships

The Jacob Burns Film Center welcomes high school, college and graduate students with a passion for film, visual literacy and service to the community, to apply for a limited number of Office Internships that we offer throughout the year.

Internships take place at our administrative offices on the third floor of the Media Arts Lab, where more than 40 highly motivated individuals work in the areas of film programming, development, marketing, membership, theater management and education.

An Office Internship allows the intern to experience working in all departments to gain a general understanding of the operations of a nonprofit organization. While film and education are our programmatic focus, it is important to understand that much of the work that supports our mission is administrative in nature – mailings, phone calls, data entry, etc. – and we look to our interns to help us complete these important tasks. We select interns with a can-do attitude, a willingness to jump in wherever they can be of assistance and a resolve to make the most of their experience here.

All internships are nonpaying. However JBFC interns are encouraged to take advantage of the many events and classes that take place on our campus.
