Volunteer Educational Facilitators for Minds in Motion
The Minds in Motion Program: This interdisciplinary program gives students the opportunity to collaboratively write, storyboard, direct, and produce their own original stop-motion animated film. The curriculum creatively integrates elements of science, technology, math, language arts, and the arts for a dynamic project based learning experience. Students’ films created in Minds in Motion have been distributed online and screened at film festivals all over the world. The program culminates in a red-carpet premiere for the students and their friends and family. During the 2009-2010 school year, over 25 fourth grade classrooms and afterschool programs will participate in Minds in Motion.
Minds in Motion Session Leaders: Joe Summerhays, Greg Nemec, Greg Lewis, and Guy Gerace
Commitment: Educational Facilitators guide groups of 8-10 students through every step of producing their short film. Workshops are two hours long, and are held once a week for twelve weeks. Facilitators commit to all twelve workshops.
Training: September 16, 10 am – 12 noon, followed by catered lunch. Please RSVP for the training by September 11. Student workshops begin September 21, with the exception of one workshop on September 16. Click here for the Spring 2010 Minds in Motion schedule.

Volunteer Educational Facilitators for See Hear Feel Film
The See Hear Feel Film Program: This one-of-a-kind education initiative aims to help third grade students become more active viewers of visual media and lead more examined lives. The program uses film to spark students' creative expression and storytelling skills, while helping them write with clarity, confidence, and joy. During the 2009-2010 school year, students from over 35 elementary schools throughout Westchester County will visit the JBFC’s Media Arts Lab twice for two-hour workshops. During the workshops, students view and discuss short films from around the world and collaborate creatively in small groups to practice the tools filmmakers use to tell stories.
See Hear Feel Film Session Leaders: Anne Marie Santoro, Barbara De George, Linda Cimillo, and Nancy Woolf.
Commitment: Educational Facilitators lead groups of 8-10 students in collaborative activities during the second hour of the workshop. Workshops are held at the JBFC’s Media Arts Lab on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 am and 12:15 to 2:15 pm. The time commitment is flexible. Some volunteers help out with See Hear Feel Film once or twice a week, while others make a commitment for once or twice a month. We welcome any level of commitment!
Training: September 22, 9 am – 12:30 pm, followed by catered lunch. Please RSVP for the training by September 17. Student workshops begin on October 6. Click here for the 2009-2010 See Hear Feel Film schedule.

Office Internships
The Jacob Burns Film Center, with our newly opened Media Arts Lab, welcomes high school, college and graduate students, as well as recent graduates and current professionals, with a passion for film and service to the community, to apply for a limited number of internships that we offer throughout the year.
Our administrative offices located in the Media Arts Lab house a staff of highly motivated individuals working in the areas of film programming, development, marketing, membership, and education. We also offer the opportunity to assist the theater management at the Film Center.
Below is a sampling of the activities in which each department is involved:
Programming: Reviewing and selecting films for the theater schedule; working with distributors to secure prints and special guests
Development: Fundraising for film and education programs; special event planning and production; grant research; and donor cultivation
Marketing: Drafting press releases and announcements to promote events, film series, and education programs; liaising with community organizations that benefit from our programs
Membership: Responding to queries from members and ticket buyers, renewing existing and soliciting new memberships; sending out mailings, ensuring member benefits are fulfilled
Theater Management: Coordinating house staff, technical staff and special events; running cameras and sound boards to produce and record events; welcoming members and guests
Education Administration: Coordinating with schools and teachers to schedule upcoming classes and programs; managing course enrollment; assembling materials for school-based programs
An intern may work primarily with one department or may serve the general needs of several. While film and education are our focus, it is important to understand that much of the work that supports our mission is administrative in nature – mailings, phone calls, data entry, etc. – and we look to our interns to help us complete these important tasks. We select interns with a can-do attitude, a willingness to jump in wherever they can be of assistance and a resolve to make the most of their experience here.
Benefits:
All JBFC internships are currently non-paying. However interns are encouraged to take advantage of the many events and classes that take place on our campus. To help make this possible, all interns are entitled to the following benefits:
Free films: Interns gain free admittance to regular screenings and special events where seats are available (tickets cannot be secured in advance).
Course Discount: Interns who take courses at the Media Arts Lab during their internship, or the semester directly following, qualify for a 20% reduction of the course fee.
Mentorship: Interns who are involved in media projects may have the opportunity to seek input and guidance from teaching faculty and filmmakers in residence during their internship
Internships for Credit:
We are happy to work with your school’s requirements to create an internship that will earn you credit. Please be specific about what your school requires in the cover note of your application so that we may do our best to accommodate your needs. If you are asked to attend an interview, you will need to bring copies of any paperwork that the JBFC will be responsible for filling out, should you be selected for an internship.
Deadlines:
We take applications throughout the year but give preference to those who apply by the following deadlines:
Internship Period: Application Submitted By:
Fall July 1
Spring November 1
Summer April 1
An internship is an opportunity to learn more about the workplace and a potential career, but also to make a contribution to an organization that inspires you. Interns work closely with our administrative staff and educators, gaining exposure to the daily operations of a nonprofit cultural arts institution and media education center. The tasks that an intern may perform are varied and will depend on an intern’s particular skills and commitment level – a minimum of six hours per week and 30 hours for the duration of the internship is required. If you believe that an internship at the JBFC is the best choice for you, please download an application.
If you have any questions, please direct them to: interns@burnsfilmcenter.org. We look forward to hearing from you.

Education Fieldwork Internships
The Jacob Burns Film Center, with our newly opened Media Arts Lab, welcomes high school, college and graduate students, as well as recent graduates and current professionals, with a passion for film and service to the community, to apply for a limited number of internships that we offer throughout the year.
With our school-based programs and the newly opened Media Arts Lab, the JBFC is at the head of an international movement to raise a generation of students equipped and inspired to analyze, assess, and communicate using visual and aural media. Over 60,000 students have participated in our original and groundbreaking programs since 2001 and as our programs continue to grow, intern opportunities in this area abound.
Interns participate in our education programs as small-group facilitators in our 3rd grade SeeHearFeelFilm and 4th grade Minds In Motion programs. Interns work closely with the students, so energy, commitment and a keen interest in working with kids is a must for these placements. Hands-on training is provided.
