JBFC Announced "Focus on Nature" Film Series

The Jacob Burns Film Center announced the "Focus on Nature" film series which will run on select days from September 25 through October 24. The opening night film is The Big Uneasy followed by a Q&A with director Harry Shearer and Jonathan Demme. The series also includes Ingredients, Journey of the Universe, The Last Lions, and Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time. “Focus on Nature” is presented in partnership with Scenic Hudson and Teatown Lake Reservation and made possible through generous support from the Hoch family and the van Hengel Family Fund.

JBFC Red Carpet Premiere Presents Animated Short Films Created by Students from Across Westchester

Jacob Burns Film Center announced  the red carpet premieres of animated short films created by students from across Westchester. On Monday, September 26th at 6:00 pm and Wednesday, September 28th at 1:00 pm, the public is invited to the theater to honor the newest crop of young animators at two exciting free events. Each premiere features the red carpet arrival of the nine-to-eleven year-old filmmakers and a screening of their original films, followed by an awards ceremony and reception. The schools that participated this fall were The Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester in Mt. Kisco, Ossining Children’s Center, The Theodore Young Community Center in White Plains, The Elm Street Neighborhood Center in Yonkers, The PEAK Center in Mt. Vernon, and The Little School in Hawthorne.

JBFC Announced Romanian Film Series

Jacob Burns Film Center announced the dates and films selected for the upcoming Romanian film series. The series “Tales from the Golden Age: New Romanian Cinema” will run from September 23 through October 6. In addition, JBFC welcomes Mihai Chirilov, the founder and artistic director of Transylvania International Film Festival, to present the two-week retrospective of 13 films from the last ten years of Romanian cinema. This fall, Chirilov will be the JBFC International Programmer-in-Residence. The series is presented in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute of New York.

September 11 Anniversary Free Community Event at JBFC

Jacob Burns Film Center announced a free community event to honor the victims and their families on the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The film From the Ground Up: 10 years After 9/11 will be screened on Thursday, September 8 at 7:15pm at the Film Center in Pleasantville. Following the screening will be a Q&A with executive producer/film subject Andrea Garbarini, filmmakers George and Beth Gage, and JBFC Executive Director Steve Apkon. The film chronicles five widows—including Pleasantville resident Andrea Garbarini— forced to mourn their losses and attempt to make sense of the madness while the world watched. Academy Award-winning Filmmaker Ron Howard Joins JBFC Board of Directors

Jacob Burns Film Center announced that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard has been elected to their Board of Directors. As vital to the organization as its acclaimed film programming, the JBFC Board is committed to the expansion of the Center’s innovative education programs, which have reached over 75,000 students across the region. The JBFC programs teach students to communicate with visual and aural media while learning the skills of collaboration, innovation, problem solving, cross cultural understanding, and risk taking. In addition to his role on the board, Ron Howard is a Co-Chair of JBFC’s Tribute to Steven Spielberg, along with his wife, Cheryl. Fellow Co-Chairs include Gerald and Agnes Hassell, and Janet Maslin and Ben Cheever. The Tribute, which will be held on the JBFC campus on Saturday, September 17, will benefit the Center’s education and outreach programs.
