THE COLLABORATIVE ART: Ellen Lewis, Casting Director
For adults, high school & college students; Sun., Nov. 15, 3:45 pm
The casting director is charged with the job of finding actors who can accomplish the director’s artistic ambitions for a film. This encompasses approaching established and well-known actors as well as discovering new talent to create true-to-life characters. Ellen Lewis has vast experience in both, having worked with such iconic directors as Martin Scorsese, Mike Nichols, Jim Jarmusch, and Sam Mendes.
Ellen Lewis has been collaborating with Martin Scorsese for twenty years. She has been the casting director for all of his films since Good Fellas in 1990, including Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator and The Departed. She likens working on a Scorsese project as a journey into a new world with an amazing group of filmmakers, one which provides a provocative and profound experience. Her role is to populate that world with characters that will bring an authenticity and depth to Scorsese’s film stories. We will trace her collaboration with this American master filmmaker, screening clips and discussing the process and experience of casting his films.
Credits include: Revolutionary Road, Charlie Wilson’s War, The Departed, and Broken Flowers.

THE COLLABORATIVE ART: Tim Squyres, Film Editor
For adults, high school & college students; Sun., Dec. 13, 3:45 pm
The film editor’s task is to take hours of raw material and transform it into a seamless and succinct narrative. The editor combines image, sound and music to create a lyrical experience that draws the viewer deep into the world of the film’s story.
Tim Squyres has established himself as one of the masters of the craft. He began working with Ang Lee on his first film, Pushing Hands, and has continued that collaboration through the recent release of Lee’s Taking Woodstock. In addition, he has edited films for Robert Altman, Stephen Gaghan and Jonathan Demme.
