Experiments in Media: Explorations of Time
14–15 years & 16–18 years
12 sessions

Stretch your imagination. Investigate character, place, light, time, sound, and composition as you create a series of hands-on projects using the state-of-the-art tools at the Lab. This course provides a fantastic introduction to the filmmaking process. Learn to use all kinds of media to tell great stories in a variety of forms.
- Discover the possibilities of filmmaking and beyond.
- Work with live-action video, 2-D and 3-D animation, interactive media and design, sound recording,     motion graphics, digital photography, and more.
- Use HD video and software such as Final Cut Pro, GarageBand, Flash, Dragon Stop Motion, and Photoshop.
- Every semester ends with a screening and exhibition for family and friends!

Experiments in Media focuses on a different theme each semester. Fall 2011 Experiments in Media highlights the concept of time, with creative explorations and projects using still photography, motion, speed, linear and nonlinear narrative storytelling, and more. Together, any two semesters of Experiments in Media provide a solid foundation in story and craft.

Projects in Media

Take your creative and technical storymaking skills to the next level as you investigate dynamic modes of storytelling and integrated media.
- Conceive, collaborate, and create in-depth films and multimedia projects.
- Use everything the state-of-the-art Media Arts Lab offers, including the Sound Stage, Recording Studio, HD cameras, and digital tools.
- Learn new ways to incorporate sound and graphics into projects.
- Explore advanced features of Final Cut Pro, GarageBand, Flash, Photoshop, After Effects, and more.
- Every semester culminates with a screening and exhibition for family and friends!
- Class size: 8
- Prerequisites: Two semesters of Experiments in Media or a minimum of two courses at the Media Arts Lab

Mastering Media
16–18 years

This yearlong course for advanced students is the capstone of our 21st Century Storytelling program. Mentored by JBFC faculty, students complete an independent study project.
- Pitch your project and be green-lit into advanced level independent study.
- Focus on a large-scale project for a whole year, working from concept to completion with a JBFC faculty mentor.
- Workshop your project with your peers, and crew each other’s films.
- Transform the boundaries of multimedia creation with everything the Lab has to offer.
- Prerequisites: Two semesters each of Experiments in Media and Projects in Media, or equivalent experience.

Advanced Animation
13–15 years

Enhance your technical and storytelling abilities in this advanced-level course.
- Create 2-D and 3-D stop-motion animation with our new Dragon Stop Motion software.
- Learn motion graphics and computer animation.
- Build small sets and mannequins.

Unscripted
13–15 years   Especially for Home-Schooled Students

Enter the complex, creative world of nonfiction filmmaking by shooting and editing a short documentary. Unscripted is a dynamic introduction to documentary filmmaking.
Learn about the craft of nonfiction filmmaking and visual storytelling.
- Explore the documentary genre through film screenings and clips presentations.
- Research and write a proposal and develop a script.
- Experience hands-on production, including shooting, lighting, and sound.
- Edit your film using Final Cut Pro, the industry standard editing software program.

Each of these exciting group experiences focuses on a different filmmaking craft and is perfect for first-timers as well as those with some experience. Students enrolled in any semester-long Lab course receive a 50% discount on these workshops.

Remixing Media: Putting the © in Piracy

- Learn to composite audio and visual recordings.

Digital Music

In this hands-on workshop, learn how to record, mix, and release music using any music software—whether it’s GarageBand, Logic Studio, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, or the next new thing that everyone’s excited about.
- Create microphone and speaker set-ups for multi tracking.
- Use effects like equalizers, reverb, and compression.
- Experiment with music technology such as MIDI keyboards, samples, software sequencers, and mixers.
- Bring your samples, instruments, and voices and leave with an original recording. No experience necessary.

The Burns Challenge: Make a Film in 24 Hours

It’s the first 24-hour filmmaking contest at the JBFC!
Oct. 21–Oct. 22 • 15–18 years

- Your team will receive a set of guidelines, a camera, and 24-hour access to the Lab’s editing and sound recording facilities.
- Each group will have 24 hours to conceive, shoot, edit, and finish a short film.
- All final projects will be shown at the Media Arts Lab
- Screening Room the following night!
- Prizes will be given!
- Recommended team size: 3–4.

Friday, Oct. 21, 5:00 pm: Meet at the Lab and get to work
Saturday, Oct. 22, 5:00 pm: Deadline for finished films
