FAQs for the General Public

Who are Media Arts Lab classes for? The Media Arts Lab classes are for everyone from age 3 to 103!  The Media Arts Lab offers classes and workshops for educators, students, adults, and families.  There’s something for everyone!

Do I have to be a member in order to enroll in your classes? No, but becoming a member provides a variety of benefits including waived registration fee, a 10% discount on classes (Family level and above), discounts on tickets, and invitations to member-only events.

Do I need experience? Most of the classes offered at the Media Arts Lab require no previous experience. Please see course descriptions for any prerequisites.

How much access to equipment and facilities will I have? You’ll have as much access to the equipment and facilities as your class requires.

May I observe a class?  To preserve the group dynamic and allow the students and faculty to maintain focus, we do not allow outside guests in our classes. We offer free tours of the Media Arts Lab through our Third Thursdays program.

Is the Media Arts Lab an accredited school? At this time, we do not offer college or graduate credits. Teachers may receive continuing education credits through our professional development programs.

May I submit my work to film festivals? Sure! We encourage you to share the exciting knowledge you’ve gained from the Media Arts Lab by submitting your films to festivals around the globe! Classes will address and support these efforts.

Do you offer scholarships? Yes. We want everyone to have the opportunity to participate in our programs. Download a scholarship application.

If a class is full, do you offer a waiting list? Yes. You will be notified as soon as possible if a space becomes available.

FAQs for Schools, Community Youth Organizations, & Social Service Agencies

Are the JBFC’s education programs accredited? At this time, we do not offer college or graduate credits. Teachers may receive continuing education credits through our professional development programs.

Do you offer financial assistance? Yes. The JBFC will waive the participation fee and reimburse all transportation costs for schools and organizations that have demonstrated financial need. We offer this assistance to groups in which a minimum of 35% of individuals qualify for public assistance, or for a free or reduced lunch through the National School Lunch Program. We encourage all schools, regardless of financial circumstances, to participate in our programs and we will do our best to meet your needs.

FAQs for Summer @ the Lab


What is Summer @ the Lab? Summer @ the Lab is a general term for our summer session at the Media Arts Lab, including Seeing Stories for young campers, ages 4-7, Lab Camp for kids ages 8-13, and cool programs for teens ages 14-18.

Is there a course catalog for Summer @ the Lab? Yes. We create a course catalog for every semester including summer. Download the full summer ’10 catalog here (3MB pdf file.)

How is Lab Camp different from Summer @ the Lab? Lab Camp is a summer camp program for ages 8-13. It is inclusive of all the activities and resources of the Media Arts Lab, and is considered a part of Summer @ the Lab.

Who is the camp director? Meet our camp director, Aaron Mace.

Who teaches and supervises the campers? Head instructors are accomplished filmmakers and educators. Each group will also be supervised by 2 trained counselors. We maintain a ratio of 1 adult to every 3.3 campers.

What do the Lab Camp campers do all day? Here’s what a typical Lab Camp day looks like:
9:00      Drop-off
9:15      Projects and production
10:30    Break
12:00    Lunch and games
1:00      Projects and production
2:30      Break (POPCORN!)
4:00      Pickup

Can I drop my campers off early, or pick them up late? Yes. Campers may be dropped off early, and/or picked up late for an additional weekly fee. Supervision, but no structured activities, will be available 8:00–9:00 am and 4:00–5:00 pm on camp days.

Should campers bring their own lunch? Yes. Campers must bring their own lunch, including a beverage and a morning snack. JBFC will provide popcorn for an afternoon snack only.

How much outdoor play time do campers get? All activities take place at the Media Arts Lab, and occasionally the JBFC Theater. In good weather, lunch hour and breaks are taken outside or in nearby Roselle park with a playground and a ball field.

How are the three-weeks of Lab Camp structured? Visit the Lab Camp information page to see full descriptions of the three-week sessions according to age range.

Do we get to see our campers’ finished projects? Yes. Family Fridays take place on the last day of each session, where families are invited to view and celebrate their campers’ creative accomplishments.

Do campers receive a copy of their projects to take home? Yes. After each camp session, our staff will create a DVD compilation of the campers’ creative work. An email from the Registrar will alert you when a DVD copy is available for pickup at the Lab.

How can we see your facilities before camp starts? On the third Thursday of every month, we offer free public tours of the Media Arts Lab. Meet in the lobby of the Lab at 5:30 pm. Tours last approximately 30 minutes, and no preregistration is required. Following the tour, there will be staff and faculty available to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you!

Why are there two different prices for every session? The Media Arts Lab offers a 10% tuition discount to JBFC members at the Family level and above. The registration fee is also waived for JBFC members at all levels. Click here for more information on becoming a JBFC member.

I see a lot of photos from classes in your catalog and on your website. Will my camper be photographed? Yes. The JBFC staff takes documentary photos of camps in session, for the strict purposes of publicity and/or promotion of the JBFC/Media Arts Lab. Those who do not wish to be photographed or videotaped for any reason must submit a written statement to the registrar.

How do I register my camper? Download the summer registration form, which should be filled out and faxed, mailed, or dropped off in person to the registrar at the Media Arts Lab at 405 Manville Road, 3rd floor, Pleasantville, NY 10570. Our fax number is 914.773.0762.

Do you offer discounts for siblings? Yes. When you register siblings, subtract 10% from the lower tuition fee.

Are scholarships available for Summer @ the Lab? Yes, scholarships are available for all classes and camps at the Lab. See our scholarship information page for details, or submit a scholarship application to the registrar.
