Working with All Communities
The JBFC is committed to working with all schools regardless of financial circumstances. Over 55% of the students in our programs come from under-resourced schools and participate absolutely free of charge. The JBFC waives the participation fee and reimburses transportation costs for groups in which a minimum of 35% of students qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch through the National School Lunch Program (according to the New York State Department of Education). We will do our best to meet your needs.

Creating Sustainable Partnerships
The JBFC offers several established curricula, while approaching each school partnership as a unique endeavor. We aim to provide a curriculum-based, resource-rich experience through student visits to the Lab and professional development. Our goal is always to teach visual and aural literacy, while making strong connections to the academic content areas. Pre-K to Grade 2
Early Literacy Program
The JBFC is developing an early childhood education program in collaboration with acclaimed literacy specialist Bill Gordh. This series of workshops teaches students how visual and aural elements tell a story and acquaints them with the tools filmmakers use to bring a story out of their imagination and into the world. With a focus on movement, sound, and storytelling, these multisensory workshops integrate all the building blocks of early childhood literacy. They also include opportunities for students to create short multimedia projects and view short films. This rich foundational experience prepares participants for their journey into the JBFC’s other film education initiatives such as See Hear Feel Film and Minds in Motion. The program was piloted at the Media Arts Lab as Seeing Stories and at Paideia School 24 and Casimir Pulaski School in 2010–2011. The curriculum will be further developed during the 2012–2013 school year with the goal of wider distribution and availability in the fall.

Grade 3
See Hear Feel Film
See Hear Feel Film
teaches students active viewing skills and the techniques of telling a story through film. Viewing short films from around the world to spur their creativity, the children learn to write with clarity and confidence, improve their own storytelling skills, and become keener observers of the world around them. The curriculum consists of five units, each featuring short films, writing exercises, and creative collaboration. All students receive a JBFC Film Journal for their personal writing, drawing, and reflection. Grade 4
Minds in Motion
This interdisciplinary program gives students the opportunity to collaboratively write, storyboard, direct, and produce an original stop-motion animated film. The curriculum creatively integrates elements of science, technology, math, language arts, and the arts for a dynamic project-based learning experience. Students’ films created in Minds in Motion have been screened at film festivals all over the world. Every student receives a Production Book that assists in the organization and creative process of animation.  More Info...

Grades 5-12
Classroom to Screening Room
Classroom to Screening Room
presents film screenings and discussions that enrich students’ study of literature, social studies, science, world languages, and the visual and performing arts. This program also provides unique opportunities to address issues relating to citizenship, current events, and human rights. Education faculty, as well as guest speakers and filmmakers, provide a social, historical, cultural, and aesthetic context for the film as well as facilitate postscreening discussion. More Info...

Reel Change
In this program, students have the opportunity to raise their awareness and effect change by producing a short film that expresses a point of view about social issues. This hands-on experience on such topics as violence, health care, and the environment helps students address the issues that are relevant to their lives and also demonstrates the power of the media as a tool for social change. Films can be personal or political, serious or funny. Students experience every step of filmmaking from pre- to postproduction to distribution!  More Info...

Digital Storytelling
Combining the power of digital cameras, scanners, and simple editing software, digital storytelling is the compelling integration of technology and story. Through the power and accessibility of technology, students share, preserve, and celebrate their stories while gaining experience with the basic skills and techniques of filmmaking. Students’ personal stories come to life through still images, text slides, graphics, music, and narration. The curriculum has proved particularly effective for English language learners.
