Crafting the Documentary

Make your own short film in this hands-on introduction to the complex, creative world of nonfiction filmmaking.
- Learn the art of interviewing and gain camera, directing, and editing skills.
- View and discuss films and clips of seminal works.
- Work with HD cameras, Final Cut Pro, and more.
- Guest teachers include award-winning filmmakers, producers, and editors.

Reel Change for Nonprofits

If your organization isn’t using the media to communicate its mission, it’s missing out on a powerful tool. JBFC faculty member Theresa Dawson will teach you how to make public service announcements (PSAs) and short films an effective part of your advocacy work.
- Learn to write a script and then shoot and edit your own project.
- No experience necessary.

new production and editing skills, watch clips, and participate in a makers community.
- For those working in any digital medium: video, audio, interactive or multimedia.

Master the fundamentals of Apple’s Final Cut Pro 7, the industry standard editing software. After you understand the power of editing, you’ll never watch a film the same way again.
- Learn basic system setup, and assemble and cut footage.
- Find out about the most effective ways to manage workflow and organize files.
- Enjoy access to editing suites outside of class time.
- No editing experience necessary. Working knowledge of Macs is required. Familiarity with video is recommended.

Scene-Writing Workshop

In this innovative course, the pressure to write an entire movie is removed as we focus on the building blocks of every screenplay: scenes.
- A series of in-class exercises help you learn to find the right set-ups, characters, and conflicts to effectively dramatize your scenes.
- Find out how your scripts sound by hearing your dialogue performed.
- Develop the tools to write more quickly and efficiently.

Adaptation Workshop

Most feature films are adapted from source material in another medium. In this hands-on workshop, learn the fundamentals of screen adaptation by immersing yourself in the craft.
- Convert some of the greatest moments in world literature into dynamic, cinematic scenes, gaining firsthand insight into the screenwriter’s craft.
- Recommended for writers in any medium.
- Great for educators!
- Please bring a laptop to the first class.

Film Style and Form: An Introduction

To fully appreciate the art of film, you must know the key elements of film language—mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, and sound. Learn, watch, and read all about them in this engaging course which will teach you to watch movies the way a filmmaker does.
- Learn the visual vocabulary and gain exposure to some of the most influential makers in cinema, from Capra to Coppola.
- Read film analyses and criticism to enrich your knowledge.

On the Road: The Vagabond in Film

The vagabond has been a favorite subject for filmmakers from Frank Capra to Agnès Varda.
- View and discuss an array of films that explore the odyssey narrative.
- Watch heroes and anti-heroes on the run or simply adrift—in a range of genres, including noir, neorealism, and screwball comedy.
- Expand your technical vocabulary through discussions about image, sound, writing, and editing.
