A CELEBRATION OF MILT HINTON
Opening Night Thurs. May 29 at 7:15
with Special Appearance by John Pizzarelli

Film: Keeping Time: The Life, Music, and Photography of Milt Hinton
David G. Berger/Kate Hirson/Holly Maxson. 2004. 60 min. NR. US. Slap Bass Productions.
The "dean of jazz bass players," Milt Hinton (1910–2000) was one of New York's first black session musicians, playing on countless records and radio and TV shows. Over six decades of performing with the likes of Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, and Dizzy Gillespie, he snapped 60,000 photographs, capturing musicians in unguarded moments on the road, in the studio, and just messing around. An essential documentary about an artist who experienced it all.
Discussion: Filmmakers David Berger & Holly Maxson, bassist/professor Todd Coolman, guitarist John Pizzarelli.
For decades, filmmakers and husband/wife team David Berger and Holly Maxson worked closely with Milt Hinton to preserve his musical and photographic legacy, serving as codirectors of the Milton J. Hinton Photographic Collection. Their latest book is Playing the Changes: Milt Hinton's Life in Stories and Photographs. Bassist Todd Coolman heads the Jazz Studies program at Purchase College and was handpicked by Hinton to replace him at the Skidmore Summer Jazz Institute. John Pizzarelli, who played and recorded with Hinton, is internationally known as a jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader.
Reception and Exhibition: Join us in the gallery for a wine and cheese reception, book signing, and the opening of "Playing the Changes," an exhibition of 20 photographs by Milt Hinton. The exhibition will be open to the public every Thursday night during this series.
Tickets: $12 (members), $16 (nonmembers)
All photographs by Milt Hinton in the exhibition are courtesy of the Milton J. Hinton Photographic Collection.

Jon Faddis

THE MANY SIDES OF DIZZY GILLESPIE
Thurs. June 5
(Approx. runtime: 70 min.)
An evening of film excerpts and shorts saluting the great trumpeter, bandleader, singer, and composer, presented by trumpeter Jon Faddis. We've got everything from performance footage to Gillespie at his storytelling best, talking about his beginnings, the source of his playing power, and how his signature trumpet got that way.
Q&A trumpeter Jon Faddis with Todd Coolman. Jon Faddis, who enjoyed a long and close relationship with Dizzy Gillespie, is "a trumpet player of prodigious lyrical force" (Nat Hentoff). He has performed and recorded widely, has led numerous ensembles, is a critically acclaimed composer, and teaches at the Purchase College Conservatory.
Students in the Purchase Jazz Studies program will perform.
Clips from A Night in Havana: Dizzy Gillespie in Cuba courtesy of Studio-on-Hudson.
Come Early! At 6:30, David Berger will lead a tour of the Milt Hinton photo exhibition.

John Scofield

LET'S GET LOST Thurs. June 12
Bruce Weber. 1988. 120 min. NR. US. Rialto Film.
"Stunning...a gorgeous gravestone for the Beat Generation's legacy of beautiful-loser chic." (Village Voice)
Chet Baker's ravaged, iconic face tells the story. After three decades of fame, the impossibly handsome and talented trumpeter-singer, who epitomized '50s cool, had surrendered to heroin and booze. Famed photographer Bruce Weber filmed the musician in the year before he died, shooting haunting, lushly beautiful images in rich black and white, and talking to Baker's fellow players, family, and lovers. All this is interwoven with performance footage in a deeply involving documentary.
Q&A: guitarist John Scofield with Todd Coolman. John Scofield, one of today's leading jazz guitarists, has toured or recorded with Chet Baker, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock, among many others. Always experimenting, he never sticks to a formula. "Even when he borrows from his past to supplement his new musical styles, it comes out sounding like something completely new" (Boston Globe). Scofield teaches at NYU.

Barry Eastmond

THELONIOUS MONK:
STRAIGHT, NO CHASER
Thurs. June 19
Charlotte Zwerin. 1988. 88 min. PG-13. US. Warner Bros.
"Shows the magical fingers hammering out harsh and powerful melodies, inventing a new music with unfailing intelligence and matchless wit." (Entertainment Weekly)
When producer Bruce Ricker found a trove of 1967–68 footage of Thelonious Monk and his band "just sitting there like the Dead Sea Scrolls of jazz," he knew this movie had to be made. With scenes of the groundbreaking pianist and composer on tour, in the studio, backstage, and in performance, this documentary gives a close-up look at the "high priest of bebop" and the people around him who learned to cope with his increasingly erratic behavior. We'd like to thank Executive Producer Clint Eastwood for generously loaning his copy of the film.
Q&A: Songwriter, pianist, and record producer Barry Eastmond with Todd Coolman.
Barry Eastmond has more than 60 gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums to his credit. He has been responsible for hit records by Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Al Jarreau, and George Benson, to name just a few. He has also written music for film, TV, and commercials, and he's a songwriter-in-residence at the Berklee School of Music.
