Food, Inc.

“Special Events”

"Food, Inc. is more than a terrific movie-it's an important movie, one that nourishes your knowledge of how the world works (or, in this case, has started not to work)." (Entertainment Weekly)

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner talks to best-selling authors Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (Omnivore's Dilemma) to lift the veil on our nation's food industry—a nexus of mechanized farms, engineered food, and unhealthy practices that's been effectively hidden from American consumers by slick public relations and slack government regulation. This eye-opening documentary explains how unfettered corporations exploited laws and subsidies to create wholesale monopolies, and explores how modern developments in food production pose grave risks to our health and environment.

Q&A June 6, 12:00 noon: Director Robert Kenner and author Eric Schlosser will be interviewed by New York Times critic Janet Maslin. Award-winning filmmaker Robert Kenner, recipient of the 2006 Peabody, the Emmy and the Greirson Awards for his previous film Two Days in October, worked for over six years to bring Food, Inc. to the screen. Co-Producer/Food Expert Eric Schlosser is an investigative journalist, best-selling author, playwright, and a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly.

The Girlfriend Experience

“New Releases”

"A mysterious and arresting look at how the culture of money turns love and desire into something you want to control." (Entertainment Weekly)

A bold new film by director Steven Soderbergh, The Girlfriend Experience follows Chelsea, a high-end call girl played by professional porn star Sasha Grey—a decision described as "the smartest thing Soderbergh did in the making of the film" (San Francisco Chronicle). Over the span of five days, the film explores her personal relationships with various men, as well as the motives and vulnerabilities that entangle even Chelsea herself. Filmed during the 2008 presidential campaign and the onset of the current financial crisis, The Girlfriend Experience is an unconventional look at wealth, the commodification of love, and the spiritual vacuum exposed in tough economic times.

Amarcord

“Classic Italian Cinema '09”

“A ravishing memory film in which reminiscence, rumor, legend, local history, and male sexual fantasies flow into one another with ease and grace.” (Los Angeles Times)

Federico Fellini was at the height of his powers when he made this hugely popular film: the lyrical, carnivalesque satire of his youth in prewar Italy, set to Nino Rota’s gorgeous, nostalgia-tinged score. Amarcord (“I Remember”) earned Fellini his fourth Best Foreign Language Oscar. NEW PRINT struck in 2008, supervised by director of photography Giuseppe Rotunno.

Summer Hours

“New Releases”

"Extraordinary...a masterpiece!"  (New York Times)

The critics are raving about Olivier Assayas' new film Summer Hours, with its wonderful ensemble cast led by Juliet Binoche and Charles Berling.  It's an incisive tale of three children who must resolve how to deal with their mother's pastoral country estate—the place where they spent their childhood summers—and her beloved art collection. Summer Hours is an engaging and touching meditation on art, memory, and the meaning of objects in a globalized world that quietly dissolves family relations. A film of great subtlety and power.
