Tango, a Story with Jews“Westchester Jewish Film Festival 2011” When Jews fled Russia and found safe haven in Buenos Aires in the late 19th century, they brought klezmer music along with them. Its lyrical, sinuous sounds worked their way into the local traditions, contributing to the emergence of tango. This unexpected connection fuels this engaging documentary, which uses family stories and seductive historic recordings to tell the little-known account of cultural and artistic fusion. Closing Night with Live Music Q&A APRIL 14, 7:30: Margot Leverett, Pablo Aslan & Carmen Staaf Margot Leverett is one of the foremost clarinetists of the klezmer revival and a founding member of the Klezmatics. Her current project, Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys, is an all-star band combining the best of bluegrass and klezmer. Pablo Aslan is a Grammy-nominated bassist and tango artist. They will be joined by accordionist Carmen Staff. After a short discussion, Leverett, Aslan and Staff will perform, launching an exciting new project, KlezmerTango, in which they explore the intersections between the two forms of dance music.

Sayed Kashua: Forever Scared“Westchester Jewish Film Festival 2011” The acclaimed Israeli Arab author, columnist, and screenwriter Sayed Kashua never feels that he belongs, living in a Jewish society. He says the Jews don’t like him because he’s an Arab, and the Arabs don’t like him because they think he’s a collaborator. This intimate documentary portrays him as a stranger in his own land. But he’s also the creator and writer of one of Israel’s most popular TV shows, the groundbreaking, edgy, and hilariously funny Arab Labor. WITH Arab Labor Dorit Zimbalist . 2009. 52 m. NR.
