"Movies about belief and believers frequently succumb to woozy piety or brittle contempt, but Higher Ground belongs...among the elect. Focused with sympathetic intensity on the ordeal of a single soul, it illuminates, as though from within, a complex spiritual struggle." (AO Scott, NY Times)
In Higher Ground, Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, Down to the Bone) portrays a woman whose personal struggles with love, faith, and trust in humans and God begins to affect the tight-knit spiritual community to which she belongs. Based on the memoir of Carolyn S. Brigg's, The Dark World, the film is Farmiga's directorial debut.
