Monsieur Lazhar"The film is crisp, evenly paced, its colors bright, as sharp as the winter cold." Bachir, an Algerian immigrant living in Montreal after his own personal tragedy, finds himself at the center of a shaken and dysfunctional education system. This Charming Girl“The Unlimited Possibilities of Cinema: Selected by Apichatpong Weerasethakul” AW: “The light in this movie is so memorable—I want to see it again. The main actress is also shining. I just want to share these two aspects of this very accomplished film.” Winner of festival awards at Berlin and Pusan, this is a brilliant exploration of the inner life of a kind, detached postal worker, revealing layer upon layer of emotional and psychological depths.

You, Mom, and the Cowboy“The Unlimited Possibilities of Cinema: Selected by Apichatpong Weerasethakul” AW: “I love a movie when it divides audiences. In this one, Buster Keaton is reincarnated as a Tokyo teen (who is also a director of the film). The silence and the machine’s humming are hypnotizing, heartbreaking.” The moody story of George, a young man who works at a wholesale market, sees some friends, and lives in the house his grandmother left to him. It all seems uneventful, but it’s not about the events.
Yusuke Inaba. 2010. 105 m. NR. Japan, Japanese. Carte Blanche Films. 7:15 PM |
