The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

New Releases

"A sterling cast and a fine balance of comedy and poignancy make this story of unfulfilled Brit retirees discovering new life in India a pleasure-filled journey." (David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter)

Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel, a group of British retirees decide to “outsource” their retirement and move to less expensive and seemingly, exotic India. They soon discover that the hotel is a shell of its former self and isn’t as luxurious as they had believed. With an all-star cast that includes Bill Nighy, Judi Dench, and Maggie Smith, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a witty, up-lifting, feel-good comedy.

The Right Stuff: Annette Insdorf discusses Philip Kaufman

Special Events

A literate visual stylist who makes intelligent, accessible movies with a sophisticated touch, director-writer Philip Kaufman directed The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Henry & June, The Wanderers, and The Right Stuff—and his writing credits include Raiders of the Lost Ark. His latest film, Hemingway & Gellhorn, with Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman, premieres on HBO on May 28. Join us to watch The Right Stuff and discuss Kaufman with film historian Annette Insdorf, whose acclaimed critical study titled Philip Kaufman has just been published. Ken Burns calls it “insightful, perceptive, and confident, and like Kaufman’s films, it repays the reader’s attention generously and with great compassion and humanity.”

FILM: THE RIGHT STUFF is one of those films that demands to be seen on the big screen! This exciting, offbeat, and wickedly funny account of the early days of America’s space program concentrates on the original Mercury astronauts. The very charismatic (and very young) cast includes Sam Shepard, Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, and Fred Ward. Four Oscars: Best Effects, Editing, Music, and Sound. Film details: Philip Kaufman. 1983. 193 m. R. USA.

Q&A Annette Insdorf, director of undergraduate film studies at Columbia University’s School of the Arts. Her previous books include Francois Truffaut; Double Lives, Second Chances: The Cinema of Krzysztof Kieslowski; and Indelible Shadows: Film and the Holocaust.

Copies of Philip Kaufman will be available for sale and signing courtesy of the Village Bookstore.
