Winner of the Caméra d'Or award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Beasts of the Southern Wild was one of the most anticipated indie films of 2012. My Neighbors the Yamadas

The Phantasmagoric Films of Miyazaki, Takahata and the Masters of Studio Ghibli

The messy, exhausting, and madcap nature of modern existence is captured by the innovatively offbeat animation of this unique little film. As if illustrated by the unseen narrator—a perceptive child next door—the hilariously eccentric Yamada family is depicted via a series of vignettes separated by thoughtful haikus. The family’s fantasies and frustrations come to life in an appealing rough, sketchy animation style that resembles crude comic strips more than the usual polished Studio Ghibli fare.

Isao Takahata. 1999. 104 m. PG. Japan, Japanese with subtitles. GKids.

2 Days in New York

New Releases

"The screenplay...has a jittery kind of honesty about it, which Rock and Delpy sometimes push to its limits." (Stephanie Zacharek, NPR)

This follow-up to 2 Days in Paris finds Marion (Julie Delpy) living in New York with her young son and new boyfriend, Mingus (Chris Rock). Marion's new life is chaotic, funny, and insightful, proving that filmmaker/ actress Delpy still has a knack for realistically portraying familial and cultural clashes on the big screen.
