A Cat in Paris

Movies for Kids (and their Families)

Dino is a cat who leads a double life. By day he’s a lovely pet, living with Zoe, the young daughter of a Paris detective. But at night Dino sneaks out the window to work with a slinky cat burglar with a big heart. A beautifully hand-drawn caper set in the shadowy alleyways of Paris, A Cat in Paris was created with young viewers in mind, but it’s smart and stylish enough that adults love it, too. Nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar!

Jean-Loup Felicioli/Alain Gagnol . 2012. 65 m. PG. France/Switzerland/Belgium/Netherlands. GKids.

Searching for Sugar Man

New Releases

"An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights."

Academy Award Nominee for Documentary Feature

The greatest '70s rock icon that you've never heard of, Rodriguez's albums were critically well-received, but bombed on the U.S. charts. While he faded into obscurity in the States, his legend grew in South Africa, where a bootleg copy of his album made it to the airwaves and quickly became a phenomenal success. The film follows two of Rodriguez's biggest fans, who travel to the U.S. in hopes of finding out what happened to the singer whose anti-establishment message connected with them during the dark days of apartheid. Searching for Sugar Man is a story of hope, inspiration, and the resonating power of music.

Detropia

New Releases

"The most moving documentary I have seen in years. Both an ardent love ltter to past vitality and a grateful salute to those who remain in place - the survivors, utterly without illusion, who refuse to leave. The filmmakers are so attuned to color and to shape that I was amazed by the handsomeness of what I was seeing. I'm not being perverse, this is a beautiful film." (David Denby, The New Yorker)

With a vivid palette and haunting score, Detropia sculpts a dreamlike collage of a grand city teetering on the brink of dissolution, struggling to survive postindustrial America while envisioning a radically different future.

An Evening with John Turturro

Conversations

Join us for an evening of conversation and film clips with the ultimate NY actor, John Turturro. One of the most recognizable faces in American independent cinema and a staple in the films of directors Spike Lee and the Coen brothers, John Turturro has made a career in creating some of the most memorable characters in both theater and film with a range that can encompass everything from memorable star turns in Quiz Show and Barton Fink, to the outlandish Jesus Quintana in The Big Lebowski, to a comic performance in Michael Bay’s Transformers series, one of the most successful franchises in film history.  Turturro is also a force behind the scenes, writing and directing his own projects most notably Romance & Cigarettes, Illuminata and Passione. Up next: Fading Gigolo, his latest writing/directing effort which will star Woody Allen.  This will mark the third time Turturro has worked with Allen. Their most recent collaboration was the Broadway production of Relatively Speaking, three one-act plays written by Allen, Elaine May, and Ethan Coen and directed by Turturro.
