Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

New Releases

"With her lacquered black hair and Kabuki-like face, one-time 'ugly duckling' Vreeland was her own work of art and, as the film reminds us, she was one of the most important and amusing self-made works of art of her century." (James Verniere, Boston Herald)

Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel paints a vivid portrait of the late Harper’s BAZAAR and Vogue editor through letters, photos, animation, and excerpts from conversations with writer and her memoirist, George Plimpton. Witty, stylish and always original, Vreeland was a tastemaker and trailblazer for career-minded women.

Searching for Sugar Man

New Releases

"An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights."

Academy Award Nominee for Documentary Feature

The greatest '70s rock icon that you've never heard of, Rodriguez's albums were critically well-received, but bombed on the U.S. charts. While he faded into obscurity in the States, his legend grew in South Africa, where a bootleg copy of his album made it to the airwaves and quickly became a phenomenal success. The film follows two of Rodriguez's biggest fans, who travel to the U.S. in hopes of finding out what happened to the singer whose anti-establishment message connected with them during the dark days of apartheid. Searching for Sugar Man is a story of hope, inspiration, and the resonating power of music.

Latin Links: Immigrant Voices

Neighbors Link 2012

Join the JBFC and Neighbors Link as we celebrate two projects that give voice to the immigrant experience, Sin País and Life as a Novela.

Sin País is the story of the Mejia family from Guatemala who pursued the American Dream for nearly two decades. Then one night, their dream shattered and everything changed. Winner of a Student Academy Award, Sin País is an intimate portrait of one “mixed-citizenship-status” family and their traumatic separation when the parents are deported and their children stay behind to continue their education in the only country they have ever known. Film Details: Theo Rigby. 2011. 20 min.

Life as a Novela is the pioneer initiative of the Jacob Burns Film Center and Neighbors Link, in which immigrants develop an original television script based on their own lives, hopes, and fears. A short documentary about the process, made by filmmaker, educator and Kathryn W. Davis International Fellow Yolanda Pividal will be screened.

Q&A and Reception: filmmaker Yolanda Pividal and Life As A Novela participants. Please join us in the Jane Peck Gallery for a light reception.

Noise/Up and Down

Hidden China: The Underground Film Scene

“Wang Wo’s deceptively simple films are experimental, emotional, and opinionated. Wang shoots moments of daily life and astutely organizes the footage in surprising ways to create his deep, thoughtprovoking work.” — Zhu Rikun

Noise (2007) and Up and Down (2008) take the direct cinema approach, immersing the viewer in a non-narrative, highly sensory experience of the chaotic sounds and images of urban China. Says Wang: “It is like offering a sacrifice to the noisy era.”
