Brooklyn Castle"It would be easy for this film to be a very obvious, very shallow story in which the moral is that even kids from the worst possible circumstances can succeed. That's not what it's about." (Linda Holmes, NPR) I.S. 318 in Brooklyn, a school where 65% of students live below the federal poverty level, has the highest ranked junior high chess team in the nation. Perennially cited by the city as "in need of improvement", the school has seen positive change in recent years thanks in part to the success of the chess team. However, recession-driven budget cuts now threaten to stop this progress. A love and dedication to chess brought them to the top, but can it help them survive? NOTE: Brooklyn Castle is FREE for all teachers who present their school ID at the box office. Free tickets, one per person, are subject to availability and may be picked up in advance. This special offer is only available at the box office. Official Website / Trailer | NPR Katie Dellamaggiore. 2012. 102 m. PG. USA. Abramorama. |

Seven Psychopaths"[Seven] Psychopaths is viciously funny, delightfully clever, and meta without being cloyingly self-conscious." (Matt Goldberg, Collider.com) Written and Directed by Irish playwright (The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Pillowman) and Academy Award winning filmmaker Martin McDonagh, the madcap and darkly comedic Seven Psychopaths follows a struggling screenwriter (Colin Farrell) who inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld. Co-starring Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits and a scene-stealing Sam Rockwell, McDonagh’s follow-up to In Bruges is hilarious and violent but not without the soul and wit he is known for. The Other Son"Making a feel-good movie about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict could be a recipe for disaster, but French writer-director Lorraine Levy manages to avoid many, if not all, of the pitfalls in her touching family drama, The Other Son (Les Fils de l’autre)" (Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter) The Other Son is the moving and provocative tale of two young men -- one Israeli, the other Palestinian -- who unearth information that turns their lives upside-down. The complex repercussions of this discovery forces them to reassess their respective identities, values, and beliefs. Official Website / Trailer | The Hollywood Reporter review Lorraine Lévy. 2012. 105 m. PG-13. France, French with subtitles. Cohen Media Group. |
