Barrymore

Special Events

"Mr. Plummer stumbles beautifully, poignantly and often, leering and searching through a haze of memory or, with concern edged with panic, calling for “a line, a line” much as Richard III calls for a horse. From smile to sneer he captures Barrymore’s majesty and grandiloquence, recites his triumphs and humiliations" (Manohla Dargis, NY Times)

In 1997, Christopher Plummer opened in Barrymore at Broadway’s Music Box Theatre. Written by the distinguished, award-winning playwright William Luce, and directed by Gene Saks, Barrymore is based on the life of actor John Barrymore, after his days as a leading man have ended and he is left with the ravaging effects of his life of excess. Plummer's critically-acclaimed performance earned him a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics’ Circle Award.

In 2010, the entire original creative team reunited to perform the hit show at Toronto’s historic Elgin Theatre for only 30 performances. The Toronto engagement culminated with the production of this film, a captured-live stage production directed by Eric Canuel. This presentation, which runs 83 mins with no intermission, also includes a short documentary, Backstage with Barrymore (RT: 45 min), featuring interviews with Helen Mirren, Julie Andrews and Zoe Caldwell.

The Revisionaries

Global Watch: Crisis, Culture and Human Rights 2012

"A gripping and important film for anyone who cares about the future of public education." (Dallas Morning News)

The Texas board of education has vast influence over what is taught to the next generation of children in that state and beyond. Once every decade, members rewrite its teaching and textbook standard —replacing, for example, Thomas Jefferson with St. Thomas Aquinas and the word “slavery” with the more benign-seeming "Atlantic triangular trade." This frightening front-line look at the politicization of education focuses on Don McLeroy, a dentist, Sunday school teacher, and fervent creationist, who presided over the board when this film was shot.

Whores' Glory

Global Watch: Crisis, Culture and Human Rights 2012

"Daring, novelistic, and unforgettable." (Salon)

An explicit, unflinching exposé of prostitution in Thailand, Bangladesh, and Mexico, Whores’ Glory is the third (after Megacities and Workingman's Death) in Michael Glawogger's documentary trilogy on the life and work of people struggling on the margins. And it’s as beautiful as it is audacious: Glawogger’s way of working with image sets him on his own plain, apart from most documentarians- he is a true visual artist who has won awards at film festivals the world over.

Michael Glawogger. 2011. 119 m. NR. Germany/Austria, Bengali/English/French/German/Japanese/Spanish/Thai. Kino/Lorber.

A Late Quartet

New Releases

"Centered around four outstanding performances, Yaron Zilberman's fiction-feature debut feels like the work of a filmmaker who knows and appreciates the art form under scrutiny, laying a credible foundation for a story that lays bare the often melodramatic passions of the artistic soul." (Justin Chang, Variety)

When the beloved cellist of a world-renowned string quartet receives a life changing diagnosis, the group's future suddenly hangs in the balance. Inspired by and structured around Beethoven's Opus 131 String Quartet in C-sharp minor, the film pays homage to chamber music and the cultural world of New York and stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and Christopher Walken.

Bidder 70

Global Watch: Crisis, Culture and Human Rights 2012

In December 2008 a young man named Tim DeChristopher committed a stunning act of civil disobedience: He derailed a Bush Administration’s controversial auction for oil and gas leases, effectively safeguarding thousands of acres of pristine Utah land. When his actions thrust him into the spotlight, he became a folk hero and spokesman for the need for bold action to create a just and healthy world. He is currently serving time for two felony convictions.
