The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) will host the fifth annual film series "Out at the Movies" (May 15 – 28). The series, sponsored by Adam R. Rose and Peter R. McQuillan, features 15 films, guest speakers and an opening night reception.

Annual "Dance on Camera" Series May 9 - 13
The Jacob Burns Film Center's (JBFC) annual film series "Dance on Camera" (May 9 - 13) includes a range of guest speakers from dancers to filmmakers, and a variety of films from around the world. Water Flowing Together filmmaker Gwendolen Cates and New York City ballet dancer Jack Soto join us for a discussion and reception on opening night, Fri. May 9.

Preview Screening of Beauty Mark at JBFC
The Jacob Burns film Center (JBFC) is proud to announce the preview screening of Beauty Mark on April 30 at 7:15 pm, as part of the "Celebrating Women Filmmakers" monthly series. Filmmakers Carla Precht, Kathleen Man, and Diane Israel, who are former Westchester residents, will participate in a Q&A following the screening.

Dominick Balletta Named Managing Director of the JBFC
The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) announced today that Dominick Balletta, former General Manager of Film Forum in NYC, will be joining the organization as Managing Director on May 15. In this newly created position, Mr. Balletta will be overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Film Center and the Media and Education Center, scheduled to open this summer.

New Adult Education Classes to Begin at JBFC

Registration has begun for two adult education classes - Film Noir and Classic Hollywood Directors II. Both classes will be taught by JBFC educator Dr. Vicente Rodriguez Ortega.

World Premiere of 30 Animated Films by Westchester 4th Graders

The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) announced today that 30 films made by students from elementary schools throughout Westchester will be shown at three red-carpet premiere events on January 24, 29, and 31, all at 6:00 pm. The animated films were created by fourth-graders in the JBFC's "Animation: Minds in Motion!" program.

"FrameWorks: Art on Film" Series Returns to the JBFC for a Third Year

World Premiere of 3 Documentary Films Created in JBFC's Unscripted Program

The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) is pleased to announce the world premiere of three short documentary films on Tuesday, September 25 at 7pm. The films were created through the JBFC’s documentary production program for high school students Unscripted, which allows Westchester students to create a film based on the lives of senior citizens in their community.

JBFC Programmer to Attend Art Cinema Training Program in Venice, Italy
Kathryn Bonomi, a Tarrytown resident and a member of the Jacob Burns Film Center’s Programming Department, has received a scholarship from Art/Cinema CICAE – International Confederation of Art Cinemas to attend a 10 day training program entitled "Art Cinema = Action + Management" in Venice, Italy from Aug. 31 – Sept. 9.

Batter Up! JBFC Announces new fall series, "Take Me Out to the Movies: Baseball at the Burns"
The series, which begins Sept. 6 and runs until November, includes a great lineup of movies, from Hollywood classics like Field of Dreams to a documentary film about the Japanese high school baseball competition, Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball, and a full roster of guests including players, sportswriters, and filmmakers.

JBFC Receives Grant from the
Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services for Senior Movie Matinees
The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) in Pleasantville has been awarded a $2500 grant for the 2007-2008 Senior Movie Matinees from the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services and the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services.

JBFC Receives $65,000 Grant from the Westchester Arts Council

The Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville has received a grant of $65,000, the maximum amount an arts organization is eligible to receive in one year, from the Basic Support Grant of the Westchester Arts Council with funds from Westchester County Government.  The funds will be used by the Film Center for general program support.

“World Crew” Students Travel to Uganda with the JBFC's Project for International Understanding Through Film.

As part of the latest educational initiative at the JBFC, the Project for International Understanding Through Film, four student filmmakers will travel to Uganda to document Kathryn W. Davis’ "100 Projects for Peace."

Middle and High School Students Raise Awareness and $70,000 for Darfur Relief Efforts

The 24-Hour Human Rights Film Marathon, hosted at the JBFC and co-sponsored by the Westchester Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center, featured groundbreaking films on the subject of genocide, followed by Q&A sessions with notable speakers. Over 500 students from 19 local schools participated, raising $70,000 for Darfur relief agencies.

Bravissimo! JBFC Announces "Thursday Nights at the Opera"

JBFC’s summer opera series (July 19 - Aug. 30) features five full-scale productions by cinematic visionaries including Ingmar Bergman, Michael Powell, and Joseph Losey, and two documentaries chronicling the beginning and end of an opera singer’s career.

Jacob Burns Film Center Celebrates the French New Wave
The JBFC celebrates the summer with 21 films from the influential film movement, The French New Wave. Beginning July 12 through August 15, the series will consist of such classics as The 400 Blows (1959), Jules and Jim (1962), and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964).

Classic Italian Cinema Returns to the Jacob Burns Film Center
The JBFC announces the return of its annual series, Classic Italian Cinema (June 1-20). The series, sponsored by the Wine Enthusiast, opens with a week-long run of Mafioso and features five other films including newly restored masterpieces La Strada and The Organizer.

JBFC Receives $750,000 Grant for its Media and Education Center from The Kresge Foundation
The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) announced today that it has received a $750,000 challenge grant toward the construction of a Media and Education Center from The Kresge Foundation. The 25,000-square-foot Media and Education Center is being created by the JBFC as part of the Campaign for 21st Century Education, a major initiative to expand its education programs. To date, over $13 million has been raised towards a goal of $20 million.

JBFC Honors the Great Screenwriter Ernest Lehman July 7 - 25
From July 7-25, the Jacob Burns Film Center will pay tribute to the legendary screenwriter Ernest Lehman. The series, Ernest Lehman: The Invisible Art of Great Screenwriting, will include such film classics West Side Story, The Sound of Music, North by Northwest, and The Sweet Smell of Success in a new 35 MM print.

New York City Schools Celebrate Completion of Jacob Burns Film Center’s "See • Hear • Feel • Film" Program
During the 2005-2006 school year, the JBFC brought its third-grade film and visual literacy program, See • Hear • Feel • Film to New York City District 7 (Region 9) schools in the South Bronx. The program was implemented in 30 classrooms in eight elementary schools, and over 700 students participated. This is the only writing-based visual literacy program for third graders in the country.

Classic Italian Cinema Returns to the Jacob Burns Film Center
The JBFC will present its Classic Italian Cinema series June 1-22. The annual celebration of extraordinary films of Italy will kick off with a screening of Roberto Rossellini’s Flower’s of St. Francis along with My Dad is 100 Years Old, Isabella Rossellini’s tribute to her father. Following the screening on June 1, Isabella Rossellini will speak about the films with the audience.

The JBFC is pleased to announce its participation in the Sundance Institute Art House Project, a national initiative to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Sundance Institute. The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) presents Four On Food (May 23-30), featuring four films that explore the mysteries of what we eat and why. The Real Dirt on Farmer John, an award-winning true story of third-generation American farmer John Peterson, will make its New York premiere to open this series on May 23. Following the film, Ruth Reichl, editor of Gourmet Magazine, will discuss the film and sign copies of her latest book, Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise. Mrs. Green’s Natural Market will host a reception following the film.

Filmmaker Jonathan Demme Elected to the Board of Directors of the Jacob Burns Film Center
Filmmaker Jonathan Demme, host of the Film Center's monthly series, "Rarely Seen Cinema," has been elected to the Board of Directors of the JBFC. Demme, a supporter of the Film Center since its inception, has directed over thirty films including Melvin and Howard, Stop Making Sense, Swimming to Cambodia, The Silence of the Lambs and Neil Young: Heart of Gold.

The JBFC was a participant in the 21st Century Literacy Summit in San Jose, CA in April, and is one of six organizations acknowledged in the recently published report of that national conference, A Global Imperative: The Report of the 21st Century Literacy Summit.
