On Saturday, September 17, nearly 600 people gathered to celebrate our 10th anniversary and honor one of the most successful and influential filmmakers of all time, Steven Spielberg.
We were proud and honored to pay tribute to Mr. Spielberg’s iconic career as a director, screenwriter, and producer, and to welcome him to the JBFC campus. While his extraordinary influence is deeply felt around the world, we commend Steven Spielberg for his profound belief in the power of film to not only entertain, but challenge, motivate, and inspire people of all ages.
Our guests enjoyed a cocktail reception followed by a seated dinner under a spectacular tent in the heart of Pleasantville. The world renowned and Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet premiered “Upon a Star,” from the films of Steven Spielberg composed by John Williams and arranged by Jacob Garchik and Kronos Quartet. The work was commissioned for the Kronos Quartet by the Jacob Burns Film Center and the David Harrington Research and Development Fund.
The program for the evening included a film tribute to Steven Spielberg and special remarks by JBFC Board President Janet Maslin and Executive Director Steve Apkon. JBFC Board member Ron Howard presented the 2011 Vision Award to Mr. Spielberg. In his remarks, Mr. Spielberg, who has followed our many achievements over the past 10 years, lauded JBFC’s unique ability to present the best of film and groundbreaking education programs to a vibrant and engaged community.
We are profoundly grateful to the Co-Chairs of this memorable event, Gerald and Agnes Hassell, Ron and Cheryl Howard, and Janet Maslin and Ben Cheever. And our deepest thanks to our donors for helping to make our Tribute to Steven Spielberg such a successful event! All proceeds will support our education and outreach programs.
