The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Based on a classic James Thurber short story (and currently being remade by Ben Stiller), this is one of Kaye’s most beloved movies. He plays a pulp-fiction writer who escapes his life by dreaming himself into situations where his heroism saves the day. But when a sultry stranger ensnares him in a web of espionage, he must become a hero for real.
Q&A March 24th, 12:00: Dena Kaye, Danny Kaye's daughter.

"...a stinging, brutally funny satire of modern politics from Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain that ads up to lesson on how to defeat a despot with a Smile button." (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone)

When controversial military dictator Augusto Pinochet's permanence of power is put up to a vote of "yes" or "no", opposition leaders hire a young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. With scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot's minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free.

Beyond the Hills
"The complexity of the film's moral world makes the movie far more than a simple anti-religious screed." (Dana Stevens, Slate.com)
Cristian Mungiu's new film, inspired by an actual exorcism performed in a Romanian Orthodox church in 2005, is further proof that his Palme d'Or win in Cannes for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was well deserved. Dealing again with two young women whose strong bond is put to a test, it's a portrait of dogma at odds with personal liberty. There are no easy scapegoats for the consequent tragedy, just the disturbing suggestion that doom lies on the other side of those hills.
Cristian Mungiu. 2012. 155 m. NR. France/Romania, Romanian. IFC Films.12:15 PM 3:15 PM 6:15 PM
"It is guaranteed to trouble any one, left, right, center or head in the sand, with confidence or certainly in his or her own opinions. If you need reassurance or grounds for optimism about the Middle East, you will not find it here. What you will find is rare, welcome and almost unbearable clarity." (A.O. Scott, NY Times)
Academy Award Nominee for Documentary Feature
Dror Moreh. 2013. 97 m. PG-13. France/Germany/Israel/Belgium, English/Hebrew. Sony Pictures Classics.2:40 PM 5:25 PM 7:40 PM
Banned in Czechoslovakia, this feminist classic is a surrealist romp through ’60s style. Two gorgeous models—both named Marie—decide that since the world has gone bad, they might as well “go bad” too. Unleashing the anarchy of their sexuality, they decide to devour the world. Made on the eve of Prague Spring, this is one of the most aesthetically astonishing films ever made.
Vera Chytilová . 1966. 74 m. NR. Czech Republic, with subtitles. Janus Films.
